Self-help groups are one of the most effective ways to help yourself with an issue because of great ideas from folks who have been there. They also provide the very important comfort of being in the company of people who understand you. Memoirs are a quiet form of this, so thank you to the the Times for this article: 7 Memoirs Therapists Think You Should Read. To add to the list, my own recommendation is Man's Search For Meaning by concentration camp survivor and psychologist Viktor Frankl. Dr. Frankl is often credited with my favorite quote: Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.
And to get to support groups themselves, check out the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) for a wide range of issues and supports. A small local gem of note is Hope Lives Here, for grief support in Holden, MA.
